Board of Education honors 2 students, 2 staff members with Certificate of Excellence

Board of Education Spotlight:

Christina DeCaro, a 9th grader at Durgee Junior High School, was crowned Miss Jr High School USA 2025 in July by the Miss Collegiate USA Organization. Christina will spend the year promoting the Miss Collegiate USA Organization’s mission to support higher education access, reduce student loan debt, elevate mental health and wellness, and champion service-driven leadership across all divisions. She was honored by the Board of Education with the Certificate of Excellence. Congratulations, Christina!

Brayden Sheridan, a sophomore at C.W. Baker High School, was named the CNY PGA Junior Tour Player of the Year in August. He was honored by the Board of Education with the Certificate of Excellence. Congratulations, Brayden!

Board of Education Staff Spotlight:

Teacher Emma Manning and Teaching Assistant Edan Yager were honored during the staff spotlight for going above and beyond this summer during our Extended School Year program.

Emma Manning is a Special Educator in our Extended School Year Summer Program. She was nominated by Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Karrie LaMacchia. Here’s an except from her nomination:

Emma exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond for students, families, and staff. Her unwavering dedication to the success and well-being of every student is evident in everything she does.

This summer, Emma was a true champion for students, providing vital support and encouragement throughout the ESY program. Whether it’s planning meaningful school-wide activities like a handprint banner to promote belonging, organizing spirit week costumes to spark joy, or designing staff t-shirts to spread positivity, Emma brings a creative energy that uplifts everyone around her.

She makes it a priority to plan and share joyful moments – taking fun pictures and celebrating everyday wins – to remind both students and staff that school is a place of connection, growth, and happiness. Her consistent smile, welcoming greetings, and upbeat presence make her a cornerstone of the school community.

Teaching Assistant Edan Yager served in the BESTT Program during our Extended School Year Program. She was nominated for this recognition by Director of Pupil and Personnel Services Jenna Wolken. Ms. Wolken oversees the ESY program. Here’s an excerpt from her nomination:

Edan consistently goes above and beyond for her students, but this summer she demonstrated exceptional advocacy and dedication. She truly knows her students – both their strengths and their needs – and always prioritizes their safety and happiness. Eden even took time out of her personal life to come in and advocate for a student multiple times this summer, which speaks volumes about her commitment. We are so grateful to have her as part of our team.
